March 2016

Masculine cards and other samples

Hello friends. Today’s post is going to be a compilation of miscellaneous samples starting with a few cards suitable for the men in your life.  March means birthdays for my brother and brother-in-law so I always have to scramble for guy cards.  Here’s what I came up with:

Masculine Cards

Mustache-Bday-2Mustache Birthday 2 – My first mustache card and I must say I like it. I didn’t have one of the cute mustache joke stamps so I made my own using various stamps and dies.

Supplies – Paper Smooches die Mustaches; Memory Box die Pinpoint Rectangles; Paper Smooches stamp set Sentiment Sampler; Impression Obsession stamp set Sentiments 2; Memory Box die Classic Alphabet U/C and Numbers

Mustache-Bday-1Mustache Birthday 1 – This is a simple version that you can make lots of and keep on hand for male birthdays. Switch the sentiment for other occasions.

Supplies – Paper Smooches die Mustaches; Memory Box die Pinpoint Rectangles; Paper Smooches stamp set Sentiment Sampler; design inspired by Jocelyn Olson

Hoppy-BirthdayHoppy Birthday – My brother grew up loving all animals; he even had an iguana in college! So a card with a frog jumping across is perfect for him.

Hoppy-Inside

Supplies – Poppy die Pond Frogs; Memory Box die Stitched Rectangles; Impression Obsession die Plain Alphabet; Taylored Expressions stamp set And Many More; design inspired by Stephanie Serrano

Numbers-B-DayHere's an easy card perfect for any man's birthday.  I cut a strip of the numbers paper and then cut it in 2 pieces (the reverse side was a perfect match!) and rounded the ends.  I added two brads, wrapped natural twine around the brads and tied a bow.  Add a sentiment and a balloon and you're done!

Supplies – My Favorite Things die Brushstroke Birthday sentiments; Penny Black die Uplifting

Diamond-BorderDiamond Border – I love this card! The new diamond border die from Penny Black cuts the solid and the outline diamond borders. Choose a color scheme and cut 2 of each from both colors.  Glue the outline borders on top of the solid borders.  Cut a strip of cardstock 1” x 5½” and adhere the middle border to the middle of this strip.  Then adhere one border above and one below, leaving a little space between the borders. Finish the card with a sentiment die cut from same colors and adhered slightly off set.  I plan to make this same card in a variety of different color schemes and sentiments.

Supplies – Penny Black die Diamond Border; Paper Smooches die Quote Tag; design inspired by Elizabeth Allan

Brevilla-HillsideWelcome – The die does all the work for this card. I cut the die from white cardstock and mounted it to blue cardstock.  Then I cut the same die from green and inlaid the hills.  Next I cut the houses and trees from various colors and glued them over the white version.  I added cloud above and a sentiment below.

Supplies – Poppy die Brevilla Hillside; Taylored Expressions Stitched Clouds; TE stamp set Welcome Home

Ironwork-Window-BirdIronwork Window Bird – It’s easy to spot a Penny Black die! I stamped the background with a PB stamp then cut the window in the center of the stamped panel. Next I cut the window again from white and glued it on top of the stamped version.  The bird was mounted behind the window.  Finally I die cut the finished piece with the Memory Box die Pinpoint Rectangles to add some more textural interest.

Supplies – Penny Black dies Ironwork Window and Perched Bird; Taylored Expressions stamps and dies Many Minis All Occasions; Memory Box die Pinpoint Rectangles; Penny Black cling stamp Star Ivy; design inspired by Jean Manis

Ironwork-WindowIronwork Window – Quick and easy. Cut the window from white and glue it over yellow cardstock. Add a few red hearts, a sweet sentiment and an embossed background and you’re done!

Supplies – Penny Black die Ironwork Window; Taylored Expressions embossing folder Leafy Vines; TE Little Bits die Love Confetti; sentiment stamp from Printworks; Memory Box die Pinpoint Rectangles; Penny Black clear stamp set Snippets; design inspired by Jean Manis

I hope you've enjoyed these cards to day.  Be sure to click over to the classes page to see the samples for the Negative Die Cutting class coming up Saturday, April 2 at 10am.  And stop in soon to shop.  All Easter stamps and dies are 40% off until April 9!

Stamp and Die Combo Sets

Hot-Cross-BunsHello friends and Happy Easter! I hope you are having an enjoyable weekend with friends and family.  Easter always reminds me of hot cross buns, a spiced sweet bun made with currants or raisins, marked with a cross on the top and traditionally eaten on Good Friday, marking the end of Lent.  So last weekend I baked these buns and packaged them to give to friends.  They are really delicious and surprisingly easy to make.  Here’s a link to the very informative video I followed.

Stamps with Matching Dies

One of my favorite papercrafting items are stamp sets with coordinating dies. You will find stamps and dies sold as combo sets, or stamps and coordinating dies sold separately. I am often asked whether to stamp first then cut out, or die cut the shape first then stamp on top of the die cut?

Sunny-DaysThe answer is simple:  If the dies are open such as these from Taylored Expressions Sunny Days combo set, you will stamp first, line up the die on top of the stamped image (because it’s open and you can see through it) and die cut second.  Little-Lovin-2-dies

If the dies are solid, like these from Paper Smooches Little Lovin' 2, and you cannot see through them to line it up on a stamped image, so you will cut the shape first then stamp on top of the die cut.

My personal favorite: the former.  I like to stamp first then die cut.

Today I would like to share with you some fun cards I made recently using 3 stamp and die combo sets from Taylored Expressions.

I love spring when brown yards turn green and dead looking trees sprout tiny new leaves.  It’s a time of renewal and rebirth.  Taylored Expressions has some wonderful new products that let us express the promise of spring.  Their new die In the Garden constructs a whole spring scene while the stamp and matching die Spring Tulips celebrates the colorful flowers of early spring.  Let me share some samples with you.

Tr-Color-PrimaryIn the Garden Tri-color Primary

So easy!  Just cut three panels of cardstock -- you can easily vary the colors -- and adhere to a top folded card.  Then cut the In the Garden die from black cardstock for a silhouette look.  Add a sun and you've got a cute card that's perfect for many occasions.  Supplies: Taylored Expressions die In the Garden; design inspired by Charmaine Ikach

In-the-Garden-ColoredIn the Garden Scene

First I created the cloudy sky (which is blue IRL not gray) using the very handy Cloud Border.  Then I cut the die from white cardstock and colored it with Copic markers which went surprisingly fast.  I could have added some shading on the tree for a more realistic look.  I added a few butterflies and a sweet sentiment.

Supplies: Taylored Expressions dies In the Garden and Cloud Border; TE stamp set Spring Tulips; Memory Box die Mini Butterflies; design inspired by Sankari Wegman

 White-SihouetteIn the Garden White

Easy!  Cut the die from white cardstock and layer it over yellow cardstock embossed with the "Walking on Sunshine" embossing folder (TE).

Supplies: Taylored Expressions die In the Garden; TE embossing Folder Walking in Sunshine; sentiment stamp from Amuse Art Stamps (discontinued); design inspired by Jean Manis

 In-the-Garden-MonoIn the Garden Mono

A variation on the card above using green and blue.  The clear sequins remind me of raindrops.

Supplies: Taylored Expressions die In the Garden; TE embossing Folder Walking in Sunshine; sentiment stamp from Memory Box (discontinued); design inspired by Kim Singdahlsen

FondlySpring Tulips Fondly

Stamp and emboss the tulips in clear then color with Copic markers.  Die cut the tulips and mount them on a couple strips of decorative paper against a waterclored background.

Supplies: Taylored Expressions stamp set and coordinating die Spring Tulips; design inspired by Joan Ervin

FriendsSpring Tulips Friends

Such a pretty card combing bright red tulips against a neutral background.  The tulips were stamped and embossed in clear then colored with Copic markers.  The sentiment was stamped on vellum.FYI:  Using the heavyweight vellum hides the Scor tape I used to mount it.

Supplies: Taylored Expressions stamp set and coordinating die Spring Tulips; TE die Frame in Frame; TE embossing folder Leafy Vines; design inspired by Shelly Mercado

Easter-Peeps-brdrAs they say, Easter's on its way so today I want to share some fun Easter cards featuring all kinds of bunnies, Easter eggs and peeps!  On the left is a card that you could use all year round for friendship, thanks or thinking of you occasions.  I stamped Stamping Bella's Peeps stamp and colored it with Copic markers.  Hiding behind the stamped and matted image is a fabulous new die from Penny Black called Edger.  Remember ... you can see details of all the supplies I used on these cards be clicking on the Gallery link above and clicking on the card.

Rabbit-Face

Look at this bunny!  He is so realistic.  I simply stamped the Impression Obsession image with Versafine Sepia ink then colored it with tan and light brown chalks.  I matted the image in brown and stamped a border on a green folded card with the sepia ink.  Design inspired by Laura Fulcher.

Bunny-Egg-1

These bunnies look like they are having a lot of fun!  I cut the egg with an egg stacklet die then stamped it with a pretty floral border.  I die cut the front of the green card with the stitched floral background from Memory Box (Floral Breeze) and inlaid the flowers and dots in yellows, pinks and oranges.  A few sequins and some playful bunnies and the card is complete.  Design inspired by Jean Okimoto.

Easter-Cutout

Easy and Impressive!  I cut the Impression Obsession dies Easter Cutout Square and Bunny Set medium from white metallic cardstock and the square frame from beautiful teal cardstock using Memory Box stitched squares.  Mount them using foam tape and you're done!  Design inspired by Kitty Caracciolo.

Frilly-BunnyThis little Bunny (Poppy Frilly Bunny) is sitting in Prairie Grass  atop the Curved Happy Easter (both by Memory Box).  And the darling little pink bow is part of the bunny die -- too cute!

Happy-Easter-Egg

See the three "ribbons" in the background?  They look exactly like 3 sizes of grosgrain ribbon but they are actually made with a new Memory Box die called (appropriately enough) Grosgrain Ribbons!  The die cuts the ribbons in 3 sizes and embosses the horizontal lines.  Now you can always match the color of your ribbon to your card.  The egg is the new Memory Box Happy Easter egg.

Spring Challenge: Cards for Cancer

Thanks to all of you who participated in our last Challenge we were able to donate almost $200 and many cards to the Animal Rescue League of El Paso to care for homeless dogs and cats.  Our new challenge is to create cards for people who have been touched by cancer.  I know many of you have experienced cancer personally or through a loved one.  I have been a  breast cancer survivor for over 26 years and was fortunate to be a founding board member of the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation in El Paso.  The RGCF is a non profit foundation that cares for the cancer community with grants but just as importantly keeps cancer survivors and their caregivers connected and informed.  This organization was created when the non profit El Paso Cancer Treatment Center was sold in 1996.  RGCF will use the cards we donate to comfort and encourage cancer patients.

To encourage you in our challenge, for every card you donate will earn you a 5% discount on any one item.  Discounts limited to 5 cards or a 25% discount.

Some of the cards that I created are displayed below, but you can see others in our Encouragement Gallery.  While most of these cards have a cancer ribbon theme, please feel free to donate any kind of card with an encouragement theme.  If you want to make cards similar to mine, here are the stamp and die sets that I used:

 Happy Birthday Chloe

MChloe-2003y precious baby turned 15 years old last week!  This picture is from 2003 and shows her in bed with her toys.  Unfortunately, Chloe celebrated her birthday at the vet's office being treated for an eye infection complicated by a return of the vertigo she had last summer.  But Chloe is a very resilient little pup and continues to improve.  She welcomes visitors and has asked me to give each of you a birthday present from her -- a 15% discount off any one item. Just mention Chloe's birthday when you stop in!
