August 2013

Apple Picking Time

Apples-in-basketWhile apple picking is usally associated with fall, my apple tree ripens in August.  The tree is hidden around the corner of my house and since I am not much of gardener my attitude is “if it blooms and grows apples it’s on its own!”  Monday I decided to venture around the corner to see if I had apples and sure enough the tree was full of little green apples.  The apples look like a Granny Smiths but are much sweeter.  Apple-CrispI picked a basketful, brought them in the house and started peeling and slicing.  I froze several baggies, but kept out enough to make a delicious apple crisp.  Since deserts are not something I can eat regularly (and maintain my diet) I gave the crisp to my friend Mary Kay who is Chloe’s groomer!  I did sneak a bite (topped with a little vanilla ice cream!) and it was delicious!

So while we’re on the subject of apples I went through the archives and found some cards that use apples as their focal image.  Enjoy!

An Awesome Little Book

Front-CoverI know I have raved about the new WRMK Envelope Punch Board, but if making 60 different sizes of envelopes were not enough, you can also use this tool to turn envelopes into a stunning little book.  I wish I was creative enough to have this idea on my own, but I actually saw “The Gentleman Crafter” demo it on the web.  I immediately started making mine using 7 Gypsies Trousseau paper.  Each envelope has a little tabbed “tag” inside and these were cut with the Envelope Maker too!

Inside-Front-PageI really enjoyed getting back into collage and bookmaking and I am sure you will enjoy it too.  I will teach this book in class Saturday, August 24 at 10am and I am asking that you register by Wednesday, August 21 by 5pm and bring your envelope punch board or buy one here.  The class will take at least 3 hours.

Here are two more photos of the book.  The photo on the left shows all the envelopes and the one on the right shows one of the small tabbed tags that fit inside each envelope.

 Back-Cover

FYI:  The word dies that I used are Spellbinders "Girly  Grunge" die set by Donna Salazar.  After I took these photos (above) I figured out that the words show up much better if you stencil them with ink while still in the die as I did for the back cover.  The book's hinge is pretty cool -- I used 7 Gypsies elastics through an eyelet (remember eyelets?  I had to search for mine!!!), a Tim Holtz hinge fastener and TH word key.

New Memory Box “Wild Sunflower” die

Wild-Sunflower-2Sunflowers are very "fallish" to me and the Memory Box "Wild Sunflower" die captures all their beauty.  I die cut the sunflower 4 times in the white focal piece (cut to 4” x 5¼”) then die cut it from gold and orange and fit these into the negative space.  Then I die cut an oval “frame” in the focal piece and cut an oval from white cardstock, both using Spellbinders Petite Ovals.  I die cut the Savvy Style “hello” in the white oval and fit an orange “hello” die cut in the negative space.  Finally I die cut two ladybugs (Memory Box) and popped them up on the card.  So colorful and “fallish!”  Her's another variation:

Wild-Sunflower-1That’s all for now.  Please stop in and shop soon – and make an envelope with the new Envelope Punch Board!  See you soon!
