January 2009

New Hero Arts Stamps

Hi stamping friends.  The weekend is here and I look forward to several wonderful classes.  We still have room for you if you'd like to join us!  Give me a call to 915-833-9500 if you're interested.

Felicity-Owls-lg  Here's a wonderful card that Felicity created this week.  The background is a large wood background from JudiKins and the owls are new from Hero Arts.  The branch the owls are sitting on is a Spellbinders die (S4-121 Doodle Parts) which Felicity stamped with the same wood background.  She added leaves using a medium birch leaf punch (Punch Bunch).  The owls are colored with prismacolor pencils and have "googly" eyes!  The sentiment is from Copper Leaf Creations.  Thanks Felicity for a very creative card!

Susan-Valentine-1-lgI also want to share with you some cards that my customer Susan Heyser recently created.  They are really beautiful!   The first card uses a Spellbinder die Decorative Photo Corners, DP from Crate Paper (Avenue) and Jenni Bowlin on the slide mount, and the Cuttlebug Embossing Border set With Love.  Susan-Valentine-2-lgSusan's next card is a personal favorite because I love the toile paper (Carolee's Creations) she chose for the background.  The heart is from the same Spellbinders die and the with love border from the same Cuttlebug border set.    Susan-Valentine-3-lg                                    For her last card, Susan used another Cuttlebug background, the same photo corner die and DP as the first card and a hummingbird stamp from Inkadinkado.  Thanks Susan for sharing your cards!  Have a great weekend and come see what's new at The Stamp Act!

Super "Bore" Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday Stamping

If it were up to me I would rename this Sunday’s big event “Super Bore Sunday!”  If you agree, join Felicity and me for a fabulous stamping class from 2 to 4pm.  Felicity will show you how to create three dimensional Valentine’s Day candy wrappers.  They are so clever!  To sweeten the deal, all Valentine’s stamps and accessories will be discounted 20% (whether you take the class or not) Sunday only.  So stop in and shop for that special someone (maybe a fellow stamper?)!!!  Remember we are open from 1 to 5pm.  Below is one of the wrappers; check out the other two on our website at www.stampactelapso.com

Hero Arts

Blue-Friend-lg As soon as the new Hero collection arrived I grabbed 2 new clear sets, Friend and Great Flourish Messages, to make samples for the 2009 Hero Premier class coming up on Saturday, February 7.  Hero’s new “advertising slogan” is “Anyone Can Stamp” and these cards prove that.  They are quick and easy, but they also teach fun techniques that perhaps you haven’t used before.  Hero has also expanded their line of flowers and pearls and I used some of each on these cards.  I hope you will join us and learn more about stamping.  Below are the other three samples we will make in the class:

Brown-friend-lg  Mean-So-Much-lg Brighten-Day-lg

Inchie Alert … Inchie Alert!

If you love all things Inchie, then plan of 2 things:  first plan to attend Harriet’s fabulous Inchie class on Feb. 7.  Look at her samples below – she has truly outdone herself with so many wonderful examples of Inchie Art!

Bird-Butterfly-lg  Birds-lg Seasons-lg

 Summer-Butterfly-lg        Polka-dot-bird-lg  Swan-lg         Fairy-lg

Second, plan to grab some of our new Inchie products … they are too cute!  We have the white chipboard squares for mounting inchies and magnet strips to adhere to the back to create magnets.  Once you have created magnets, show them off on our new magnetic display board!  Or you can store them in a very cute clear acrylic box.  Or make a little accordion book to show off inchies.  All the supplies are here but who knows how long they will stick around.  Email me to reserve yours today!

There's always a lot of fun stamping going on at The Stamp Act so stop in soon!

Hi friends.  Sorry I haven’t blogged in a few days.  Running the store is more than a full time job!  I am even working on Mondays which is supposed to be my day off!  Many of you may not know that I also run another full time business from my tiny office at The Stamp Act.  For my advertising business, called Hello Polly, I write and produce message-on-hold advertising for businesses nationwide.  These are the advertising messages you hear playing when you call a doctor or a travel agency and are put on hold.  I have had this business for more than 18 years and have two people working for me, a professional sound engineer with a studio and a professional voice talent.  In addition to the advertising end of things, we also record the messages that we all hate to hear when we call a business and are told “press 1 for this and press 2 for that.”  It’s an interestng business, and one that demands its share of attention!

Classes … Classes … Classes

I want to take a minute and invite all of you to come to a class soon.  Last weekend we were happy to have Ann from Minnesota come to our Penny Black Critters class.  Denise, an experienced stamper and lover of ATC’s, learned a new way to apply rub-on’s in the Basic Grey Card Kit class.  In the same class, Maumi learned a new way to distress papers.  Classes are fun and informative, inspiring and creative.  Take a couple hours out of your weekend or evening and join us!

Valentines Classes Coming Up this Weekend

Don’t miss our classes this weekend as we continue to make cards that are perfect for sending warm greetings to loved ones for Valentine’s Day or throughout the year.  For the morning class I designed three elegant cards that feature decorative papers, pretty embellishments and unique stamping techniques.

Basic-Grey-Heart-lg Hidden inside the layers of this beautiful “card-within-a-card” are a pair of Basic Grey magnet discs which magically close the smaller heart-shaped card into the larger card.  This lets you stamp a secret message inside to someone you love with all your heart.

In-my-heart-lg “You are in my Heart” uses bold and beautiful Basic Grey Bittersweet paper as a background for a lacy punched border (Fiskars) and several die cut hearts (Spellbinders).  Chocolate pearls (KaiserCraft) and a Penny Black sentiment complete this handsome card.

Love-lg For the “LOVE” card I turned the Just Rite rectangular stamper on its end (so to speak) as I stamped the “Love” vertically using the 50 point Brayton font alphabet.  Next to it I stamped the Memory Box swish border and added some pale pink crystal hearts (A Muse).  The tiny tag was die cut (Spellbinders) and stamped with the same Brayton alphabet this time using the 25 point type.

Felicity has created three colorful cards using new stamps from Outlines Rubber stamps for her afternoon class.    Sparkle-Love-lg For “Sparkle Love” card she decided to “color” the stamp in a unique way, and she continued this treatment insideSparkle-to-you-lg with the “Sparkle To You” stamp.  And aren’t these “Courting Snails” darling?  Not only are they colored beautifully, but Felicity also used the Just Rite rectangular stamper to create her own sentiment.  Courting-snails-lg Isn’t she clever?  Bee-mine-outside-lg Her third card features a library pocket with a “Valentine” bee flying over lots of pink and red hearts.  Bee-mine-inside-lg We can’t do all three in the class but Felicity can tell you how to complete the ones she doesn’t have time to teach.  Join us for the fun and learn some new techniques too!

Basic Grey Card Kit Class

Be-mine-lg I am repeating the Basic Grey Card Kit class this Wednesday evening from 6 to 8pm.  You will make 8 cards using the new Bittersweet papers, chipstickers, die cuts and rub-on’s.  Don’t miss it!

What’s Coming to The Stamp Act this Week?

A lot!  A huge Hero Arts order from their brand new catalogue will arrive Wednesday chock full of their new designs as well as the catalogue itself.  Wait until you see all their new clear stamp sets – they are wonderful!

Wednesday UPS will also deliver an order from one of our largest distributors.  It will include a beautiful array of Basic Grey Urban Prairie papers – very shabby chic pretty!  I’ve reordered many of the perennial favorite Cuttlebug embossing folders so if you don’t have Swiss Dot, Textile Texture, Congratulations, Bird and Swirl, Floral Fantasy, Divine Swirl or Stylized Flower, stop in.  You never know when these will be discontinued, so don’t put off getting them.  I also reordered the Border Set “With Love” which is perfect for the season of love stamping!

Among the new products coming are Dew Drops in a wide array of colors from Robin’s Nest.  These small acrylic rounded “drops” are perfect for adding a touch of dimension to cards.  I also ordered some fabric scrap panels from Crafty Secrets.  These are like clip are on homespun cotton fabric and are often featured on the blogs.

Call me at 915-833-9500 or email me at hellopolly@aol.com to register for our classes this weekend or the Inchie class on February 7.  We would love to see you!  Happy Stamping, scrapping and paper crafting!

New at The Stamp Act

New Arrivals

Lots of new products are arriving at The Stamp Act.  This week we received more of Tim Holtz’s new masks.  I know these are large, but check out how he uses them on cards and tags at his blog on www.timholtz.com.  Here are photos of the masks respectively: timeworks, concerto, borderlines and flourish:

Timeworks  Concerto  Borderlines  Flourish

The Making Memories Love Notes is a pretty collection and you’re sure to drool over the red glitter paper and the vintage pearl paper.  I also order a few of the Mini Book which a fabulous value because you get some of everything in the collection to make the book.  And don’t forget the cute shimmery brads!

Words-paper   Vintage-pearl  Red-glitter-paper  Shimmer-brads

Thanks-setCuttlebug embossing folders are so popular and they make such quick, yet impressive cards.  Since many of us need to make thank you cards for holiday gifts, I thought I ordered the set of 4 “thank you” embossing folders. I will put together some cards with these so you can see how fun they can be!  They are approximately 2 ¾” by 3”.

The K & Co Life’s Journey collection is so “shabby chic” and this week in addition to paper and collage elements we already have, I added the metal frames and metal keys.  These classic antique-style keys are unique because they are flat on the back so while dimensional they don’t stick up too much!  They will work perfectly with the new Tim Holtz keyholes.  I also got back in stock the Tag Pad and the Cardstock die cuts.

It may be early, but Easter and Spring are coming and you’ll love the new Doodlebug Bunny Hop paper.  Sweet Spot is glittered and Garden Fresh is flocked so you’re in for a treat with this collection.  Wait until you see the absolutely darling brads that are coming!

Easter-Argyle  Pinwheel-stripe

Fancy Pants’ new Daily Grind paper is really cool and I decided to buy the 8” x 8” pad along with the full size sheet of what they call “cards.”  Just cut the cards apart and you can make 9 cards really fast!

New from Stampendous

The new Funny Bunny is going to be a big hit.  He is the newest “stretchable” clear stamp similar to the earlier Snowman.  Funny-bunny

FrogStampendous has some cute new frogs too. In this card you see one frog on the lily pad and one leaping.  The “Hoppin’ over to say hello” sentiment completes the card.

Fun-flock Just in time for Valentines Day, we have new fun flock colors too: think pink, raspberry tart, cinnamon toast and chocolate lotto.

And last but not least by any means are the new flocked stickers.  They are gorgeous!  We have the flocked red poinsettias, green holly and white snowflakes.  For Valentines Day we have scrollwork large hearts, smaller hearts, and red flourishes.  Check these out because they are unique!

New from Lockhart Stamps – more inchies

This week we received more inchie stamps from Lockhart stamp company.  Karen Lockhart is so generous and always sends hand stamped and colored  samples of her stamps.  Here are the four new stamps I ordered: Cape Cod Cottage, Cocoa and cookies, Good night moon and At the movies.

Cape-Cod-Cottage  Cocoa-and-cookies  Good-night-moon  At-the-movies

I also ordered the cute “Tart of Hearts” stamp pictured below.

What to Expect this week

The new Hero Arts catalogue – dozens of new stamps and almost as many new embellishments!

New stamps from Outlines Rubber Stamps – Felicity will use them in her upcoming class on January 31.

Penny Black “Hugs” Valentines Stamps

Mice-hugs-lgToday I have three delightful Valentines to share with you.  They are all created with the new Penny Black “Hugs” clear stamp set which includes hedgehogs, kitties, mice and more!  I will be teaching this class on Sat, January 24 (10 to noon) and I hope you can join us.  The techniques I will teach in this class include coloring with Twinkling H2O’s; die-cutting; using border punches; and making a gatefold card.  I will also show you an easy ribbon trick.  Call me to register and plan to have a great time with these playful critters!

Deadbeat Designs

If you’re not familiar with Deadbeat Designs stamps you have missed some great fun!  Mark Jetton, the owner and creator of these stamps, has the most irreverent sense of humor and his stamp designs are fresh and creative.

Mark’s a Texan through and through and he has pretty much cornered the market on Texas stamps.  He’s got everything from the Alamo to bluebonnets (our state flower) to all manner of western attire.  Here are just a few of his many samples.

 Cowgirl-Friends-lg  Lucky-live-Texas-lg  Bluebonnets-1-lg  Bluebonnets-2-lg

Mark’s other passion is chocolate and his chocolate stamps are equally wonderful!  Not only does Mark create unique stamps, but he sends along terrific samples for us to share with you.  Pictured below are many of his “chocolate” samples.

Recently Mark released a new collection of Valentine stamps and included three creative samples.  Felicity has reproduced them adding her own special touches, and she will teach a class with three of his sample ideas on Sunday, February 1 from 2 to 4pm.  Here are the projects we will make that day.

Mark just joined the blogoshpere (kicking and screaming I might add) so be sure to check out his blog at www.deadbeatstamps.typepad.com.  I would subscribe to it just for Mark’s humor!

Sneak Peek

Last Sunday my friend and fellow stamper Nancy needed to make thank you cards.  I needed some too so we decided to make them together, and since it was getting late, we thought a simple design that we could reproduce quickly would be the best bet.  Well, anyone who knows me knows that I don’t do simple very often.

Nancy chose Scenic Route paper with tree branches on it and that got me to thinking of the Spellbinders Nested Bird die that had been calling my name for some time.  I grabbed one from the showroom and off we went die-cutting birds for our cards.  Here are the samples we made – doesn’t that bird just make the card?

Birds-thanks-1-lg  Birds-thanks-2-lg

Just-a-note-lg Monday when I finished my Black and White Cards, I made this card using the Nested Bird dies (it’s a set of 3 birds).  If you look closely you will notice that the wing of the medium bird is actually the small bird with its beak cut off.  Tooooo cute!  I have lots of other ideas for these birds plus the Nested Butterflies and Nested Flowers (each a set of 3), and I will teach them in a class on Sat, Feb 14.  Several of my ideas are home décor projects so it should be a fun class!  I will post them as soon as I make them!

Thanks for stopping by and please tell your friends about our store.  The only way to keep a small retail store like The Stamp Act alive and creatively active is to come to the store and buy your stamps and products.  It won’t happen by itself – we need YOU!

I’m BACK!  I hope you haven’t given up on me.  I have spent the last three weeks cleaning the store from top to bottom.  The “back rooms” were full of 10 years of stuff, and the classroom storage area was crammed with inks, paints, adhesives and all kinds of stamping paraphernalia we use for classes.  Everything was pulled out, sorted, and either donated to several wonderful teachers and school counselors; donated to Goodwill; hauled to the dumpster; or kept.  Items that were kept were cleaned, sorted and labeled.  After that task was finished, I started on the store’s showrooms.  Those were also cleaned and merchandise was moved to new display areas.  During this process I also pulled hundreds and hundreds of items for a huge clearance sale.  This “spring cleaning” just about killed me because I have very bad knees and being on my feet for many hours a day is very painful, but now that it’s done, I am so happy with the results.  I have only one more huge task ahead – sorting hundreds of stamped samples!  Ugh!

Sale, Sale, Sale

As I mentioned, we are now having a huge clearance sale.  We have hundreds of stamps, papers, embellishments, and much, much more on 50% discount.  The sale will last until everything is sold, but hurry in soon for best selection.  There are plenty of really great bargains so come on in and take a look!

Thank You

I would like to say a quick thank you to all the wonderful stampers from out of town who visited the store over the holidays.  Ann from Minnesota found Dreamweaver Stencils she had never seen before; Cathy from Ohio loved the store and my technique using the Memento ink pads and jumbo foam daubers.  Judy from Phoenix discovered the Just Rite stampers which she had never seen before.  As I talked to these ladies and other from across the country, the recurrent theme was how they either had no local stamp store to teach them new techniques or their local store(s) were closed or closing.  If you value learning more about your hobby, please patronize your local stores.  In this very precarious economy, local stores need all the business they can get.  Take a class, shop for new stamps, and enjoy expressing yourself artistically!

Black and White Class

Needless to say, I did no stamping during the cleaning spree.  And when I finally got back to it, I was very rusty!  My first efforts really disappointed me, but I persisted and thankfully things improved.  My class this weekend (Sat, Jan. 17 from 10am to noon) is “Black and White with a Splash of Red.”  I am using papers from Kaisercraft, several fun techniques and lots of embellishments from die cuts to felt flowers to stickers.  Let me show you the cards I made for the class.

 Elegant-stems-lg  Flocked-stickers-lg  Red-heart-embossed-lg  Heart-flourish-lg

In the class you will learn an alcohol resist technique that I learned from Tim Holtz (see first card above); how to flock stickers (second card); how to emboss and die cut craft foil (first card, second row); and how to layer Nestabilities, use Cuttlebug borders and use ink over an embossed background (last card).  I hope you will join us!

Birthday Card Class

Sat afternoon from 2 to 4pm, Felicity will be teaching a “Birthday Cards” class featuring the new Impression Obsession “Birthday Cakes” clear stamp set colored with Twinkling H2O’s.  Felicity will also demo the Layered Watercoloring technique that Dave Brethauer has on his blog at www.davebrethauer.typepad.com.  The small folded cards shown below are made with the largest Spellbinder Mega Scalloped Rectangle.  These small cards are great for gift enclosures, too!

Basic Grey Bittersweet Card Kit Class

Another popular class coming up on Saturday, January 24 (2 to 4pm) or on Wednesday, January 28 from 6 to 8pm is the new Basic Grey Bittersweet Card Kit.  This wonderful card kit makes 8 darling Valentine cards using the new Bittersweet collection papers – which I love – and plenty of chipboard embellishments and stickers.  The cards are quite creative and I know you will enjoy making them!  Here’s a preview of the cards:

If you can't attend class you can buy the kit.  Please let me know and I will reserve one for you.

I have lots more to blog about this week so check back tomorrow.  Don't forget the sale plus I have lots more orders coming in.  The new Hero Arts release has some really great stamps and embellishments; we have new and very funny Valentines stamps from Deadbeat Design -- watch for an upcoming class using these stamps; new Outlines stamps are coming soon; plus new stamps from Stampendous and  Lockhart.  I have also reordered the Inchie stamps from Inkadinkado so if you want those let me know.  Harriet will be teaching an Inchies class on Sat, Feb 7 (I will show her samples later this week) and I will be teaching a Grid Stamping class on Sat, Feb 28.  Have a great day!
