July 2008

Merry Christmas in July!

Hello friends.  Merry Christmas – a few months early!  We’ve had a very busy 2 weeks preparing for our Christmas kick-off classes.  Jeri and I have had fun challenging ourselves to create fun and festive Christmas cards in the heat and humidity of our monsoon season.  We haven’t resorted to playing Christmas carols yet although we might if more inspiration is needed!

Today I’d like to spotlight the cards I created for the “Easy, Quick Christmas Cards” classes on Friday, July 25 from 6 to 8pm and Wednesday, July 30 from 6 to 8pm.

The first two cards feature new Penny Black tree stamps.

The third card uses stamps from Memory Box and a sentiment stamp from Make an Impression.  The background is decorative snowflake paper.  For the final card I used the Cuttlebug embossing folder “Snowflakes” and a technique that my friend Ana Blunk showed me.  Isn’t it elegant – and easy!  Thanks Ana for the tip!

While I was busy working with a blue color palette, Jeri was creating cards of many colors.  Her first card is a real show stopper in metallic red.  The Cuttlebug embossing folder (“Textile) background in shows off the Penny Black woodland scene perfectly.  Jeri’s next card features a lovely angel (Acey Duecy) stamped and distressed lightly with sepia ink.  The teal mounting really pops the background.  Finally who says Christmas cards have to be red and green?  Jeri chose bright pink and lively lime green for the whimsical Stampendous snowmen; she added lots of crystal glitter and used the same stamp embossed in silver for the background.  The final card below is one I created using Penny Black's Winter Scroll for the background and Winter Scene from Serendipity Stamps for the focal image.  Both are accented with Prismacolor pencila nd the berries are enhanced with Ranger's Glossy Accents.

For you book lovers, we have two “12 Days of Christmas” book classes coming up.  This Saturday afternoon I will teach a class with Penny Black’s new 12 Days set that’s full of whimsical animals!  Each stamped image is colored with Prismacolor pencils then framed and mounted on a scalloped mat made with Spellbinders square Nestabilities.  Finally I added fun accents like glitter, feathers, wiggly eyes and more!  It's pure fun and a book everyone will treasure year after year.

For you lovers of the Southwest, I will teach the 12 Days in a more western style on Saturday, August 2 from 1 to 4pm.  Here are some of the sample pages from that book.

New Memory Box Stamps and Papers

There has been so much going on lately that I haven't really shared with you the fabulous new papers and stamps from Dave Brethauer and Memory Box.  Fortunately, both Jeri and Harriet made wonderful samples with them so let me share their artwork with you.

Harriet can see more in a piece of paper that anyone.  In the first card below, she uses one of his papers with 2 flowers (which she stamped) and one sentiment stamp (Stampendous).  In the second and third cards, Harriett stamps one of her favorite stamps (Rue Maurice from Stampington) directly on his papers.  She completes the second card using a border punch and the third card with some self-adhesive vellum in the corner.

In her next two cards, Harriet stamped Dave's gorgeous Swirled Bird stamp directly on the papers.  "His papers are full of little scenes."  Harriet told me, and looking at her cards I see it is true.  Finally, Harriet made a stunning wedding card using Dave's Versailles Crest stamp.  She stamped it one of his new papers then embossed it in silver.  Thanks Harriet!

Jeri made these samples for the classe she taught using Dave's new papers and stamps.  They really show off the color and beauty of both.  Thanks Jeri!

Now from the sophisticated to the whimsical -- Dave's new Summer Penguins have waddled their way into the store.  I know, I know -- enough with the penguin stamps -- but you must admit they are cute!  I can't wait to make a cards with the Curler Penguin to send to a girlfriend who prefers to sleep until noon, and a card with the doctor penguin to send to my brother.  Here's a close up view of the whole menagerie!  Watch for my class coming up Wednesday evening, July 9!  Check the website for details.
